“Moped” is already an English word.

It refers to a low-powered motorized bicycle that typically has both:

  • Pedals (like a bicycle) – you can pedal it

  • small engine (usually 50cc or less)

In modern usage, the term is often loosely used to describe small scooters (like a Vespa) even if they don’t have pedals, though technically those are called “scooters.”

Quick difference:

  • Moped → has pedals + small engine

  • Scooter → step-through frame, no pedals, engine usually 50cc–250cc
